The Tangleweeds Cottage

Morning! Where to start with the story-telling? I'll start with the nuts and bolts: I moved over the holidays. Just within Oakland, from a three bedroom house that I rented with my boyfriend and his two kids (part time) to a tiny little studio cottage (pictured below.) It was probably the most stressful move of my life thus far. Moving during the holidays while running Tangleweeds was very challenging. The perfectionist in me that loves order and organization just had to be soothed and cajoled with promises of afternoons full of tidying up and decorating and organizing once the holidays fell away.

I moved mainly because I am at a place in my life where I need my own place for a little while. My own little place to decorate as I please, to nest in as I please, to have a little space from the rest of the world. My boyfriend and I are still together, and the details of that I'll save for those closer to me. We are choosing to navigate our relationship in our own way and in our own time. I've never really done anything in the conventional way, and my relationships are included in that little statement.

Moving within Oakland was challenging from an expense perspective. Rents have sky rocketed just in the last two years. What I could get for my money now is so much less than what I could get for my money five years ago when Jeff and I moved in together. It's sobering, and it's propelling me towards my decision to start looking at where I want to live with a more long-view. Basically I've decided to start making the plans and necessary preparations to move somewhere quieter and more affordable sometime in the next 2 to 6 years. The reason for the timeframe is tied up in a lot of business stuff, but also has a lot to do with my not quite being done with my time in Oakland just yet.

(text continued below photos)

In the meantime I'm gonna love the heck out of this city that I've called home for the last 8 years (12 years off and on really.) There's this part of me that just wants to get on with my re-location plans. In a way, in many ways, this is a good lesson in enjoying where I am at this moment, even while knowing that everything is temporary. Because in the grand scheme of things, everything is, right?

The pictures above are all taken at my new home (except for the table - that's at my sister's.) I really am adoring having my own space. I'll be posting more photos of home decor stuff this year as I make the time for those projects. The table above is a piece I picked up at an antique shop in Modesto with my sister. The thing had been re-painted in the ugliest shade of black-brown and then scuffed up to look "rustic." I'm sanding it down on top and then going to seal it and leave it with the natural wood finish. The legs and baseboard will be painted a matte turquoise. I promise to have some "after" shots once it's done. My sister's been a valuable resource on stuff like this. She's like a one-woman Martha Stewart encyclopedia.

Well, that post got wordy fast! I'm not sure what my exact intention will be with the blog this year. I'm just going to let it unfold naturally and see what I'm compelled to post about. In the meantime I gotta wrap up and get ready for a little jaunt into the city to restock Wallflower on Valencia. I hope everyone has a wonderful week!

Full Circle ~ It's been a while

Oh, well. There went almost two months and not a peep form me on my blog! Those of you who know me know that I ended up moving in December. Between moving and running Tangleweeds, I just had to let a lot of things go. And unfortunately the blog was one of them. And this post is really just a short little tease to say I'll be back on the blog regularly again soon! I'm still in catch up mode after finishing up the last part of moving and wrapping up the last of the craft fairs.

In the meantime I leave you with a little sneak peek of the things to come for Tangleweeds in 2016. . . Happy new year to you all!

Open Studio Event Announcement

Details are all set for our first EVER open studio event!

The essentials: We are located at 301 Jefferson Street in Oakland (cross street is 3rd Street). The event will be from 11am to 4pm on November 22nd, see our events page for more details. We are located in a securely locked building and cannot leave the door open all day, so if you're interested in attending you'll want to RSVP to tangleweedsjewelry@gmail.com. A few days before the event we'll send out an email with details about what to do once you arrive.

Hope to see you there!

Full Circle ~ Craft Fairs, Craft Fairs, Craft Fairs

It's that time of the year folks! When the Tangleweeds schedule gets chock-a-block full with great events for holiday shoppers. Two important things to take note of if you live in the bay area. The first: I'll be debuting the new Traverse collection in person at the Urban Epicurean event the weekend of the 7th and 8th of November. (See my events page for more details.) And secondly, I am definitely planning the open studio holiday sale. It's gonna happen folks! Right now it's looking like I'll have the event in mid November, before everyone goes away for Thanksgiving weekend. Once all details get settled (most likely within the next week), I'll post about it here and on all of the usual social media venues.

a little sneak peek of the studio coming together - still lots of work to do!

Happy Monday everyone!

Holiday Open Studio Prep

There's been so much going on with Tangleweeds at the end of 2015, sometimes I forget to share it all over here. This week I've been prepping the studio for a holiday event. It's been fun getting things organized and de-cluttered. At a certain point I know I'm simply going to have to say, "might not be perfect but looks good!" For you local folks who may be interested in attending, I'll make sure to post about it here once I solidify a date and I'll also be posting about it on all of the usual social media channels. In the meantime I'm gonna keep on with the arranging, de-cluttering and in-general preparations!

Hope to see you there!

LWM ~ Something Fun

Listening ~ I recently discovered this Australian country band, the McClymonts and now I can't stop listening to their mostly up-beat relationship-story songs. Trust me, there music is a TON of fun to sing along to in the car!

Wearing ~ My new dress from Make it Good Apparel. They're based in Portland (but they almost always come out to San Francisco for the Renegade Craft fair.) I love the organic-geometric quality to their patterning and garments.

outfit details:
dress - Make it Good
boots - clearance at Anthropologie
earrings - Tangleweeds TailFeathers design
bangle - Tangleweeds Spaces design

Making ~ Everything! Ha, really though. This is that time of the year when holiday wholesale orders start rolling in, I start prepping for holiday craft fairs, and I'm working on the new designs. So, yeah, I thought everything pretty much summed it up nicely. =)

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

Full Circle ~ Monday Weekends

Around here at Tangleweeds headquarters, Mondays are our weekends. Easy, simply pleasures are indulged on these "weekends". . .

Flowers on my walks through my neighborhood in Oakland.

Cooking dinner last night at the end of a lazy day.

And, yup, Arlo pretty much sums up the general mood at home on a Monday.

But now it's Tuesday and time to re-focus and re-motivate. Thanks to everyone who came out the Rockridge street fair on Sunday. For those of you local folks looking for another event this month to catch Tangleweeds at, check out our events page here.

Full Circle ~ Re-assessing

Running what is basically a one-woman business can sometimes be tricky sailing. There are always so many plates spinning in the air at once. There's planning for the near future, planning for the distant future, and there's planning for tomorrow, often all within the same day! I've become much better at anticipating things and pivoting when certain things don't go according to planned, but I still have a HUGE tendency to over-schedule and over-book myself.

My point with all of this is that I'm backing off of my intended release date with the new collection. It is coming along nicely, it's the collection I'm happiest with to date (although I think I say that about every collection =) You'll see the last three photos here are some more sneaks of the new pieces. I've had some hiccups in my life lately that have got me realizing that A LOT of the pressure I'm feeling is self-imposed and I am totally allowed to back off a bit.

What I will say about the new collection is this: Many of the pieces are going to be one-of-a-kind or very limited editions. I will have them available at my craft fairs and online. A few of the designs will be longer runs. Many of the designs incorporate stones with a very natural cut and rustic finish. There is a very organic quality to much of this collection. For example, the earrings pictured above (with the necklaces in the photo - third from bottom) are made with ocean jasper. Every pair will be uniquely different as no two stones are alike and I will be cutting the metal shapes to compliment the stones. If you choose to buy from me online you will get to choose from the pairs available and what you see pictured will be exactly the pair you will receive.

I've been wanting to put out a collection like this for quite sometime, and I want to do it right, not rushed.

The collection is made up of primarily earring and necklace designs, along with one new bracelet design (that I am insanely happy with.) I promise that as soon as I release the collection I will make it know both here and on my other social media platforms. Thanks as always to my wonderful friends, family, and Tangleweeds collectors who have been there along this long and winding path.

And now it's back to work for me! I hope everyone's week is off to a great start.

Full Circle ~ Monday Weekend

Today is my weekend. A one-day weekend, but I'm not complaining. Things are chugging along nicely with Tangleweeds this year, and sometimes that has meant one-day weekends. Thanks to everyone who came out the Lafayette Art and Wine Festival this past weekend. Such a great event! (For those of you not familiar with Arlo and Otis, let me introduce you to my two babies. They lazed about with me this morning. Arlo is the orange one and Otis is the brown tabby.)

I did the photoshoot for the new collection on Friday. I'm still hoping to release the pieces this week, but that is starting to look like a distant possibility given that I have a fair to prep for this coming weekend. What I will offer though, is an extension on my fall equinox sale as I imagine that many of you are holding out to snag one of the new pieces on sale. Don't worry, you'll have your chance =)

I hope everyone's week is off to a great start. Good energy's brewing this week as we approach a full moon eclipse this weekend!

LWM ~ Let's Make Time to Cry

Listening ~ I've been listening to a lot of Iris Dement lately. Her songs are so heartfelt, and if you're in need of a good cry, she definitely helps make that happen. Ironically, this song is titled "No Time to Cry" and is one of my favorite songs of hers from her entire music catalog. Her most recent album, The Trackless Woods, is worth a listen too. She took poems by Russian writer Anna Akhmatova and set them to music.

Wearing ~ Admittedly, I have not had the time these last few weeks to snap very many outfit photos. Over labor day weekend though, Jeff DJ-ed at a special event at a tiki bar in Alameda and I decided to swing by for a bit. It had a "Love Boat/Yacht Rock" theme, so I dressed up accordingly! The best part about this outfit (in my opinion) are the earrings. I feel like they're the perfect "art teacher" earrings. Or, cruise ship earrings =)

Making ~ Lots of Featherlight necklaces. At least that's what I'm working on today. Tomorrow I'll be photographing the new collection, and then I'll be moving into production on the new designs as swiftly as possible!

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!
